 Current Volunteer Opportunities:

The CAS always needs volunteers, whether at the shelter or elsewhere. Some volunteers work directly with the animals while others counsel prospective owners about choosing a pet. Many volunteers participate in pet-facilitated therapy and in community educational ventures. Others assist in fund raising efforts, publicity, and mailings. An annual dinner recognizes the efforts of the CAS's much-appreciated volunteer family.

If you are interested in volunteering your time to help the less fortunate animals of Charleston, we could use your help! Below are some different ways you could make a difference through our shelter:

  On-Site Shelter Opportunities:

* Give a few cats some much needed play time and attention.

* Take the dogs outside for a walk and play time.

*  Bathe and groom the dogs and cats.

* Help with outside and inside clean-up.

* Work in the adoption room to help answer questions from the public and process paperwork.

*  Help to answer phones and greet customers at the front desk.

* Assist with administrative duties (including making follow up phone calls to: recent visitors who adopted an animal from us or fundraising contacts, filing, bookkeeping, etc...)

* Take photos of animals for our website.

* Provide Web/IT assistance.

* Help out in the shelter retail store.

Special Event and Community Outreach Opportunities:

 * Assist with fundraising and community outreach events in various ways such as working at the booth, answering questions, set up, clean up, taking care of the on-site CAS animals at the event and more….

 * We need help organizing clippings from our archives and newspaper articles, volunteers are needed to help publish a monthly "Wags and Licks" poster.

 Foster Opportunities

Are you able to open your heart and home to an animal in need of a

temporary home? Some of our animals need a loving place to stay until they are old enough or healthy enough to be adopted out to a permanent home.

All volunteers will be required to:

* Attend a volunteer training session at the shelter (contact Jennifer Slark for details)

* Shadow a staff person for more specific training for a designated amount of time depending on the volunteer duty.

* Commit to volunteering at least 8 hours per month.

* All volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. Anyone under the age of 18 will need to volunteer under the supervision of a parent or guardian at all times.

For more information, please contact our Director of Volunteer Programs, Jennifer Slark at 843-329-1579 or via email at volunteer@charlestonanimalsociety.org.

The animals at the Charleston Animal Society can’t wait to meet you!
