Planned Giving – Supporting the Work of the
Charleston Animal Society
CASH DONATIONS
Direct contributions by cash, check or credit card are the most
common way to support the work of the Charleston Animal Society. You can
become a member of the CAS for as little as $25 per year. This
will entitle you to receive our newsletters, Low country
Tails, each year. Any additional donation that you make will help
the CAS even further in accomplishing our mission.
MATCHING GIFTS
More than a 1,000 corporations and organizations in the United States
encourage philanthropic interest among their employees by offering
a matching gifts program. Contact your company’s human resources
department to determine if your employer matches gifts to the
Charleston Animal Society. Typically, if a matching gifts program is available,
you will need to complete a simple form and your employer will send
us a check that will add to your own contribution, maybe even doubling
or tripling your gift to us. This donation comes in addition to
your own donation and has no additional cost to you. With the help
of your own employer, you can ensure that your giving dollar is
stretched to the maximum benefit of our shelter programs at the
CAS.
WORKPLACE GIFTS
The convenience of donating at the workplace has made payroll deduction
programs a popular alternative for the contributor. The Charleston
Animal Society participates in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) for federal
employees and other workplace campaigns. Please check with your
Human Resources Department to see if the Charleston Animal Society is a designated
charity or a donor option as part of your workplace contribution
campaign.
MEMORIAL GIFTS
A memorial is a personal remembrance that honors the life of a loved
one. For most of us, our loved ones include companion animals, friends,
and relatives. Making a memorial donation in any amount to the
Charleston Animal Society is a thoughtful way to express sympathy for a loss,
while sharing a deep concern for the animals. A memorial can also
honor special events such as anniversaries, birthdays, holidays,
graduations, weddings, and other special occasions. The CAS will
send a letter to the address that you designate acknowledging your
thoughtful donation. Unless you desire to make your gift anonymous,
it will also be printed in our quarterly newsletter, Lowcountry
Tails.
GIFTS OF STOCK
Donating a highly appreciated asset to the Charleston Animal
Society may
allow you to avoid a significant portion of your tax liability while
still receiving a charitable contribution deduction. If you are
currently holding long-term securities that have appreciated in
value and decide to donate them to the CAS you are generally
entitled to an income tax deduction for the fair market value of
the stock, no matter what your original cost. Additional capital
gains taxes that are due would be avoided.
PLANNING YOUR ESTATE
It is very common for most of us to underestimate the value of our
own assets. We don’t really believe that we have an “estate”.
However, if you own anything at all, you have an estate. This includes
cash, real estate, personal property, investments, retirement funds,
life insurance, and other forms of assets. Properly planning your
estate ensures that your assets that you have accumulated over a
lifetime are distributed according to your wishes.
Making A Gift By Will: Having a will is a good
idea for everyone. If you do not make decisions on how to dispose
of your assets after you die, the “state” will decide
for you. We encourage you to consult an attorney to discuss the
benefits of establishing a will. If you are interested in fast answers
to simple questions, the Internet is tailor-made for delivering
self-help estate-planning information. Nolo Press at www.nolo.com
is a website which provides information on estate planning as well
as links to many other helpful websites. Another similarly useful
website is www.estateplanninglinks.com.
As you are making these plans, we ask that you consider making
a provision to support the Charleston Animal Society. Charitable gifts made
by bequest are not taxed as part of your estate. The CAS is proud
of our many supporters who appreciate our work for the animals and
have stretched their giving dollars even further by including the
CAS in their will. And perhaps most appealing is the idea that
part of your legacy of helping and loving animals will live on for
future generations. There are several ways to make a bequest to the
Charleston Animal Society:

Just recently, a stray dog was picked up on Edisto
Island by a kind and caring person. Because of where the dog was picked up,
the staff decided to name him Eddie. Eddie has a severely injured front leg
as well as mange. It seems he had his shoulder stepped on and broken when
he was a puppy. That shoulder and attached leg no longer work for Eddie.
Unfortunately, Eddie’s front leg needs to be amputated so that he can
function without that appendage getting in the way of his daily activities.
The gentleman who rescued Eddie brought him to us and made a donation
towards his care. As generous as the donation was, it is only a starting
place for Eddie’s care, not to mention the needs of the other 11,000
homeless and sometimes maimed and crippled animals that we care for
annually. As much as we want to do all we can for Eddie, we must also
continue to care for all the other abused and abandoned animals at our
facility that just need a clean place to sleep, nourishing food to eat and
essential medical care just to survive. Won’t you help Eddie and all those
wonderful animals have a chance today? We need your help to continue to
care for these homeless, neglected and abandoned animals we house each
year. The Charleston Animal Society never turns any animal away, therefore our needs
are great and we need your support to continue to feed, provide love and
nourishment and shelter for these lost and abused animals.
Did you know your gift of: $25
- Feeds one litter of homeless puppies or kittens,
or buys food for orphans until they are able to eat.
- Vaccinates and deworms one animal.
$50
- Provides vaccines and heartworm care for three (3)
puppies.
- Feeds one horse while we try to locate the owner.
$75
- Feeds one litter of homeless puppies or kittens
and provides vaccines and heartworm care for three (3) of
them.
$100
- Provides heartworm tests and treatment for a small
or medium sized dog.
- Provides animals with mouth injuries, digestive
issues or an older pet with the special diet they might need.
$250
- Pays for three (3) spay surgeries for low income
families.
$500
- Pays for x-rays and repair of a fractured or
otherwise injured homeless animal.

Please make your gift today to the
Charleston Animal Society and help us to continue to provide food, shelter and necessary
medical care for the more than 11,000 homeless animals we care for each
year. We want to prepare as many as possible for adoption so we can find
them permanent loving homes.
Stowe Now after surgery, There was no keeping this dog still he runs
faster than most with only three legs. Thanks to the surgical skill
of Dr.Tom Hentges

There are several ways to make a bequest to the
Charleston Animal Society:
• A fixed amount of money or specific property (stocks, real
estates, investments, etc.). Suggested language for an outright
gift –
I give and bequeath to the Charleston Animal Society, a nonprofit corporation
located in Charleston, South Carolina, the sum of ($_________) to
be used for its general purposes (or for a specific purpose, if
indicated).
• A residual bequest, leaving all or a percentage of the entire
remainder of your estate after all is settled. Suggested language
for a residuary clause –
All the rest (or a percentage), residue, and remainder of my estate,
both real and personal, I give, devise, and bequeath to the
Charleston Animal Society, a nonprofit corporation located in Charleston, South
Carolina to be used for its general purposes.
• A contingent bequest, naming the
CAS as the recipient
should another beneficiary not survive you. Suggested language for
a contingent interest clause –
I give and bequeath to (name of the person) the sum of ($___________)
in the event that he/she shall survive me. Should said (name of
the person) predecease me, I give and bequeath said sum to the John
Ancrum SPCA, a nonprofit corporation located in Charleston, South
Carolina to be used for its general purposes.
Living Trusts: Generally, a will must go through a probate
process that can often be expensive and time consuming. By creating
a revocable living trust you can avoid probate while naming the
Charleston Animal Society as a beneficiary of the trust, much as you would by making
a bequest in a will.
Life Insurance Policies: The options for life insurance gifts to
the Charleston Animal Society are varied. Your existing policy, paid-up policy
or new policy all can be used to make a gift of life insurance to
support the CAS’s mission. The benefit of designating an
existing policy is an immediate income tax deduction, while a new
policy offers deductions for continuing annual premiums. Designating
the CAS as beneficiary or successor beneficiary of a single,
term, or group life insurance policy is also an option, although
it offers less significant tax benefits.
Retirement Funds: You can name the Charleston Animal Society as the beneficiary
of your IRA, 401K, 403B, pension, or other retirement funds. Many
plans simply require filling out a simple form for naming or changing
the name of a beneficiary.
Other Planned Giving Vehicles: There are many other ways of using
trusts or special funds in which a donation can be made for the
benefit of the Charleston Animal Society:
• Charitable Gift Annuity – An annuity is established
in which you can receive a charitable deduction and receive income
from the annuity for life. The principal can pass to the
Charleston Animal Society upon the death of the annuitant or the last income beneficiary.
• Charitable Remainder Trust or Unitrust
– These trusts
also allow you to make a gift and keep the income. The principal
will pass to the Charleston Animal Society when the last income beneficiary
dies. The trust provides a charitable deduction and avoids capital
gains taxes when appreciated assets are sold. The difference is
based on how the fixed annual income is calculated – the trust
is fixed and the unitrust varies based on the value of the assets.
• Charitable Life Estate – You can leave property to
the Charleston Animal Society and enjoy its use for the rest of your life
or the lives of you and your spouse and children or others that
you might name. Typical types of property used for this life estate
would be a home, vacation cabin, ranch, etc. You can enjoy the property
during your lifetime, receive a tax deduction, and still make a
future charitable donation.
• The “Totten” Trust – This is a very simple
trust in which you sign a card at a bank that leaves an account
“in trust for” the Charleston Animal Society. This action is
revocable and the assets of the account are yours for the rest of
your life, passing to the Charleston Animal Society free of probate following
your death.
